Seeing Double re Insurance Options
|
|
|
When creating a Lot, on the Shipping Options tab, in the Domestic Shipping section, we have to select whether Shipping Insurance is included or not or should be added to the Package and Handling Fee. When I drop that menu down, there are two options titled "Insurance is not offered."
Is this a glitch or is my copy of AW wacky? I have a screenshot I could post if you aren't seeing this in your copy.

It is not a glitch and your copy of AW2000 is not whacky
That has always been like that since the shipping options changed about a year ago or so.
The values had to be duplicated in order to be backwards compatible with existing data.

A year? Then I guess it's me that's wacky! LOL.
A recent discussion on another forum (not AW users) made me focus on these options, so I noticed the duplicate entry for the first time.
I'd been assuming that for UPS shipping, selecting "[insurance] Included in Shipping Cost" would result in this being noted somewhere on the auction page. It doesn't. EBay's policy won't allow it. So tonight I actually read the Help file on this topic in AW, and surprisingly, it was helpful.
I understand now that these insurance "options" are mostly moot. However, the "Add Insurance Cost to the Package & Handling Fee" looks useful. It would work fine for Fixed-Price listings, but for auction-style listings, there'd be no way to know in advance how much insurance would cost, right? If the item were bid up to, say, six times your $9.99 starting price, and you'd already added a static amount for insurance, you'd come up a little short.
Not a big deal, I suppose, unless the bids went sky-high. Is there some trick to making the programmed-in insurance work for listings that trigger a bidding war?

The settings are actually very helpful. And should eBay ever revert the insurance policy, there would not be a bunch of re-coding necessary.. Plus other sites like Overstock allow insurance to be charged.
Insurance included in ship/handling is very useful if you are shipping via UPS as they insure for the first $100.00. If the item cost is greater than that, simply add additional weight. Usually another pound will more than cover the extra cost of insurance. The shipping page on eBay will display the cost includes insurance.
If "Insurance not available" is selected, the invoice page at eBay, I know says that insurance is not available.
Using Add insurance to ship/handling works good too. We use that alot.
We know what insurance costs up to x dollars. If the item is likely to bid up higher than the first insurance tier will cover, we will simply use the next insurance cost dollar amount in that field.
Or add another pound to the package weight.
eBay's insurance policy basically means the seller is completely responsible to see the item arrives intact and undamaged. How each seller addresses that requirement is up to them. The AW2000 shipping options allow each user to do just that--manage the insurance requirement in a manner that best fits their business model.
For us, we insurance anything over a certain dollar limit. If something happens to a low dollar item, we bear the cost ..
So to manage that, we usually use UPS for larger more expensive items because the first $100.00 is insured. Adding the extra pound or increasing the handling fee slightly usually covers the additional insurance cost for more expensive items in a bidding war.
We do not use USPS insurance. It is too expensive. We use Endicia insurance. I know Garry was using someone else too that was really economical. Can't remember who it was though.
