Item Specifics Nuttiness

1. Where do Item Specifics come from?

One of the Item Specifics for Pottery & Glass: Pottery & China: Art Pottery: Made in Japan is "Orgin" (there's also one named Origin). I don't think I ever created a Custom Detail and misspelled it Orgin, so where did this come from? Does everyone have it? Is there a way to delete it? If I create a Custom Detail or New Value, does it appear forever after in other people's AW programs? Hope this question isn't tooooo dumb.

2. Out-of-Control Item Specifics:

In Coins.....Federal Reserve Notes, I've got Country (ok), Item Type (no problem), but then there's Item+Type, Item+Type, Note Type, Note+Type, and another Note+Type, and they all have basically the same Values. So any goofball can create these, and they stick?

Update: I wrote this question several weeks ago when I was listing a bunch of old currency. I just now checked, and these overbearing and duplicative Item Specifics are gone! So is there an eBay Item Specifics judge who cleans up the nonsense every now and then, and if so, why do I still have "Orgin" in Made in Japan Pottery?

Sue,

The Item specifics including the spelling is returned to AW2K by eBay.. They send out the "List". And eBay gets its list of Item Specifics from sellers suggestions/requests.

You cannot delete the Item specifics that are in the database and are provided by eBay. But you can add Custom Values.

I know,,the misspelled words drive me bonkers too..

Sue,

Oh yes I have Orgin too!

But my question is if the catagory is "Made in Japan", what is the point of an item specific of "Origin" anyway!?!?!

Exactly! Many of the Item Specifics are redundant. I still think they're just a big PITA and wish eBay would replace them with something built into eBay -- some program that would look at title and description keyword and select Item Specifics automatically. I think they were initiated to help sellers who have no knack for writing descriptions/titles, and also to help shoppers find stuff when they weren't very good at configuring Search keywords. Well, I guess I have no sympathy for either of those groups. Has anyone ever seen stats on whether Item Specifics had any impact on sales?

Sue,

Interesting question.. And strangely enough there is some data on that particular concept -- searching with Item Specifics.

Item specifics help refine a search in many instances. And are required in some categories as eBay moves those categories towards the "catalog' idea, in those particular category.

Item specifics also help seller's better describe the exact condition, product type, or use of a particular item. If the prospective buyer does not search in a particular category, e.g. "Made in Japan" then without the Item Specific "Origin (spelled correctly ) your item might not show in the search.

I just got back from the Rocketplace conference in Las Vegas. Some of thes questions were part of a few of the presentations. When I get home and get settled, I'll be happy to share with you all some of the neat stuff I learned. Right now, I am sitting in DAllas airport watching flights get cancelled one right after the other. And I am wondering if I am going to make it home because of the hurricane

Oh my! I hope you get home safe and sound! What is the weather like in Dallas? My husband has flown thru the Dallas airport (third busiest in the world and fourth largest) a few times and says it's just amazing -- huge but laid out well.

Sue,

It is raining. Sometimes hard but generally just a a steady rain. Wind gusts are pretty strong. SO far we are on time but they are cancelling St Louis, MO and Springfield, MO and other towns close to Tulsa. We'll see.

Dallas is huge but it is really easy to get around in. THe pilot thought it would be really bad landing but it wasn't at all. Not like we expected. Dale & I are just a tad concerned as they keep moving our gates around all over the terminal. Sometimes that is not a good sign.
