new computer

Just had to buy a new computer and reload and consequently reconfigure AW2K. I'm having a problem with sales taxes - the basic tax country-wide in Canada is 5%, charged on the purchase price plus shipping and insurance. I can't seem to get the program to add the 5% to the purchase price - it shows up as just tax on the shipping.

I'm sure it's something basic that I'm entering wrong but I sure can't figure out what it is. I've been using the program for 7 years, but my last computer crashed and lost all my settings! Thanks for any help, Glenda

Glenda,

bummer about the computer crashing.. I know how you feel. My shipping computer literally blew up last week. that is the worse feeling in the world.

Something you might want to consider, is burning a DVD of the entire AW2000 folder ever so often. then if something happens to your computer, you copy the AW2000 folder from the DVD to the C drive, and restore you last backup file. You are good to go complete with all settings.

But now that doesn't get you up and going now,,,

You configure the Sales tax in the "Tax Profiles" You will find that by going to "File | Tax Profiles"... on the menu. You build a tax profile however you want it.

Then when someone buys something, I am sure you remember to check the "Taxable" checkboxes on the Invoice.

Does that help?

Thanks Judy, that's what I did, but for some reason, instead of 5% tax, it's calculating it at 0.5%. I tried changing it to 5.0% but it still does it at 0.5%! Weird!!

And good advice about burning a DVD of the folder - I'll make a point of doing that as soon as I get it running right!

Hi,

Hummm,, you are not configuring it correctly. I just set up a 5% tax profile in my AW2K and it works properly.

So let's try everything from the beginning.

Add a new tax profile. In the first tax rate area, enter in 5.0. The field should go from 5.0% to simply 5 when you click out of it. Is that what it does??

Yes, that's what I'm doing, and that's what the field does when I click out of it. Then when I click the taxable and the buyer taxable buttons on the invoice, it calculates it at .5% (eg: on a $20 total sale it adds .10 tax instead of $1.00). I guess I might have to email Thom - I haven't bothered him for years, so it's probably time I did LOL!

Re: new computer new [re: grandjac]

Hi,

Have you tried creating a totally new Tax Profile using a different tax rate to see if that works correctly. Like using 5.5% and see if that calculates right.

Re: new computer new [re: bluepennylady]

Just tried a test profile at 5.5% and now I see what it's doing - it's only calculating the tax on the shipping - not on the basic purchase price. I'm beginning to feel like Alice down the rabbit hole - curiouser & curiouser!!

Hi,

ahh,,if you only need tax on the item price, be sure to uncheck those options at the bottom of the Tax profile. Double check that and see..

Re: new computer new [re: bluepennylady]

I tried that first off and it didn't charge any tax at all. And no, I need tax charged on the price plus shipping (and insurance if the sale warrants it).

Off topic, but if the US Govt. ever tries to bring in a GST or VAT style tax, fight it tooth and nail! It's such a pain....

HI,

I wonder, I just wonder.. Are the item prices stored in AW2K in Canadian dollars or USD???

Re: new computer new [re: bluepennylady]

US dollars - I've always listed in US dollars and never had a problem. I just can't see what I'm doing differently. I've been on eBay since long before there was a Canadian site and, incidentally, before there was an AW2K to make our life easier!

By the way, in Canada we have three different tax profiles and they're all different percentages. I'm finding that each of my tax profiles is only charging tax on the shipping - NOT on the total purchase plus shipping.

Re: new computer new [re: grandjac]

HI,

You will need to go into My eBAy preferences and configure it to charge sales tax on shipping too. I had the same problem... Kansas we have to charge sales tax on shipping too.

I figured as much (in terms of USD) Worth asking though.

Well, you might run a backup and rebuild the database. That might put things back into order from the moving everything around.

I'll check back in later. Heading out for dinner. Is my hubby's birthday and my daughter in law

Re: new computer new [re: bluepennylady]

Would my computer crashing change my eBay preferences? I set them years ago and update them every time the tax rate changes - for all the good it does!

I just emailed Thom and explained the problem - I'll post his response when I get it in hopes it will help someone else.

Happy Birthday to your DH and DIL, I'm off right now too, for dinner with friends and then a stamp club meeting. Enough of problems for one evening!!!

Thanks for all your suggestions Judy, Glenda/duujogl & muminlaw

Re: new computer new [re: grandjac]

Glenda

No the computer crashing would not change them. However, I discovered my preferences were changed and I had not touched them. It has happened twice. Once is very recent. That is the only reason I mentioned it.

I am a bit baffled... Maybe it will hit me in the middle of the night what is going on with the tax profiles

Yes please do let us all know..

Re: new computer new [re: bluepennylady]

Turned out that the problem started when the auctions were entered onto eBay manually using SIY, there was no indication the items were taxable. Therefore, when I imported them to AW2K, even though I checked the boxes for taxable and buyer taxable, the program only charged tax on the S&H and Insurance.

On the invoice window when matching the email notifications to the generated invoices, under the "invoice items" heading in the invoice window, there's a column with a checkbox for item taxable. I put a tick in each of those, and problem solved. Thanks again Thom!!!
