Restore from Database

If I can make a suggestion, you should make the actual install binaries available for download. I've just encountered a problem that enlightened me to the fact that AW2K backups are essentially worthless.

I last did an AW2K backup on 09/09/10. Somewhere around 09/13/10 my Windows installation was corrupted, which required a complete reinstallation. I am not a fan of the reformat-and-reinstall method. I prefer to reinstall on a different drive, in the event I need something from the old drive.

I needed to reinstall AW2K, so I downloaded your installer and ran it. Everything went fine. I then tried to Restore the database. This resulted in AW2K crashing every time it started up. I removed, rebooted and reinstalled about 5 times, and every time the same thing happened. Essentially, my database backup was unavailable. I also tried several different databases, in the hopes one would take. No go.

My solution, which was only available because I didn't format my original drive, was to copy the entire contents of the old installation into the new installation. I ran that, and that's when I discovered there had been a program update between the 10th, when I did a backup, and today. It appears your installer installed a newer version of the program, and it could not run with my 10-day-old database backup. If I didn't have the old installation, I would have been in trouble.

This could have been resolved by allowing me to download the version of the software I was using when I backed up.

Ultimately, I won't bother doing a database backup once a week. Instead, I will just make sure the AW2K installation folder is backed up nightly, and that will have to serve as my emergency backup.

Very frustrating.

HI

I am sorry you are frustrated.

The AW2k backup files actually work very well. I have had to use them more than once.

Tech support could have provided you with an easy step by step solution to correct the errors and crash you experienced as the database was simply a different version. It is very easy to correct.

Re: Restore from Database new [re: bluepennylady]

I ran into a similar issue on 12/25/2010. I was reconciling auction lots and needed info from 2009. I had archived the database earlier in the year and removed 2009 xacts.
So I tried using a backup via restore. Any backup I had failed with messages indicating missing fields in the database. The database schema changed and now the older files do not open.

When AW changes the database they should provide a program to bring backups to the latest design. It would be up to a user to actually run that, it should not be automatic. That is fairly standard in trying to keep backups and archives still usable.

I will try an email to support to see if that will get me any help.

HI Bob,

The issue is easily corrected.. The problem is the old database doesn't have all the same fields etc as the newer AW2K version. But it is totally fixable.
