SSL E-mail

with almost all email providers now using secure pop / smpt e-mail, AW2000 really needs to do a update.

I'm really having trouble using any of my email providers to provide the very old standard pop e-mail, and it sounds like others are frustrated as one by one, providers require ssl/ TLS.

Is there any hope? I've been a auction Wizard user since the 1990's, but its getting difficult.

Hi there

I will pass this along to tech.. I don't know if there are any plans to change that or not but I 'll sure check on it.

Re: SSL E-mail new [re: scalesusa]

I have also been using AW2K for many years and would not trade it for all the tea in China! It has carried me through and paid the bills- being a stay-at-home mom, 6 years of cancer, and now kids in college. However, even the FTP site (pair.com) I was referred to by the AW2K program has tried to get me to convert. At Christmastime, I had transferred all of my files to a new server (at their request with a reduced rate promotion) only to find after I did all this work that they require SSL email on all new servers. They told me I was using an older program and I need to upgrade from it. When I said it was simply not possible- The reply for that was that I could be placed back onto the old server but it was not going to be nearly as reliable as I might want. I did this and in the end it took me about 4 days total. I had over 4000 auctions running, too, and was really scared of messing up. I was wondering if there was ANY kind of a workaround I could do to get this fixed or rigged in some fashion.

Re: SSL E-mail new [re: ehlmann]

I have Qwest DSL, but had never bothered to use their e-mail. Turns out that it doesn't require ssl, so for now, anyway, I have it setup just for AW2000.

Re: SSL E-mail new [re: scalesusa]

Yes, and my pair account has worked fine since 2000 or so when I originally started using both pair for hosting pictures/emails with AW2K BUT they explained that all of their newer servers use SSL and as older ones are phased out they will not offer old fashioned pop3/smtp. They simply say it is not secure and they just will not offer any longer. When the "antique" server that hosts me finally fails permanently then I am out of luck with them. :( I feel as many things as I have figured out and created work-arounds on that this must have something also.

Add my name to the list of long time users of Pair.com with AW2000. The system has worked well for me for over 10 years and I really wouldn't want to change either.

Re: SSL E-mail new [re: flpackrats]

I don't know if this will be helpful to others but will relay my SSL experience.

Our email comes from a dedicated server that does not have a good spam filter so we set it up such that our email is received through Gmail with their excellent filter. You may have other reasons for using a another email client aside from AW2000.

However, in order to take advantage of AW2000 features by having our email download here we needed to use Gmail's POP3 which requires SSL, a feature AW2000 does not have.

My brilliant son (if I may say so myself ;)) came up with a workaround.

Download stunnel (http://www.stunnel.org/downloads.html) and install it. Then it will need to be edited (http://blog.thestateofme.com/2012/04/16/howto-get-pop3-from-gmail-without-ssl/) and, of course, "run" it.

In AW2000, your email account will need to be set up using POP3 host name: localhost and port 110 and SMTP host name: localhost and port 25
Your username and password will be those that you use for Gmail.

Cheers
Barbara

HI

Not quite sure of what you mean so if I am not answering correctly, I am sorry.

I still use pair.com as my image hosting and email provider.

We use Aw2K for all communications to our buyers. Even Amazon.com transactions. We just made custom email templates that have all the URL links etc removed because Amazon doesn't allow those. Each profile has default email templates for each step of the process.

I hope that is what you meant. If not, well let me know and I will try again.

Yes, I think you answered me correctly. My web host is Hostgator, but I have the e-mail going through my DSL provider, Frontier. So can I use Hostgator some how to provide me with SSL e-mail? Maybe I need to contact them to help me through this situation. I hate to have to change everything.

Thanks for your help, Judy. Hope you are doing well on Amazon. I see that you have FBA. Good luck!

What is the best hosting website to use. Right now I switched to Yahoo and I think I am sorry that I did. What company do you recommend? and what do you think of BlueHost? I had Hostgator and they put me on another server that was so slow that I left. Thanks!

Re: SSL E-mail new [re: onlynancydrew]

See below for a copy of what I posted in another thread a couple days ago.

Update:
I contacted Pair Networks by phone and email. They have no help for this problem (suggested some email settings, but nothing worked; the log-in fails). They are aware of the fact that AW tech support is unwilling to alter the program to enable SSL. They suggested Stunnel.

I downloaded/installed Stunnel, and I cannot even figure out what component of the program I'm supposed to open. I've looked at a few tutorials online, but they are Greek to me. I need help!

Is anyone still reading this Forum?? Can anyone post clear instructions for dummies like me on how to set up Stunnel so I can continue using my Pair.com email addresses? Pleeeeeze!

Copy of post:

For 13 years, I've used Pair Networks for email forwarding, image hosting, and domain parking (my email addresses for ebay and etsy are based on that domain name).

Yesterday, Pair announced they will soon require SSL authentication. Here's Thom's reply to my inquiry:

"Unfortunately, the email system in AW2000 does not support SSL/TLS.
If you have any questions, please let me know."

Short and to the point, as always.

I'm disappointed that AW2k tech support seems uninterested in providing a solution to this new wrinkle. I've been happy with the reliability of Pair Networks, and I don't want to change my email addresses.

In June 2013, Barbara (onlynancydrew) came up with a workaround that involved a program called Stunnel:

"Download stunnel (http://www.stunnel.org/downloads.html) and install it.

Your username and password will be those that you use for Gmail."

All my personal email accounts (dslextreme.com) use Gmail servers, but the addresses I use for online sales have nothing to do with Gmail (or is that fact irrelevant?). Figuring out how to continue to use Pair.com for email hosting/forwarding sounds daunting if not impossible to my old brain, so I hope some of you wizards here will provide a little guidance.

Thanks,
Sue

Re: SSL E-mail new [re: Same_Old_Sue]

So all of us who use PAIR networks are working quickly because our latest notice said it is going to SSL on 10/21/14 ready or not here it comes! I worked with the last post and got my email on AW2K to work with SSL GMAIL so far. I don't know about others but handholding works best for me so I will share this by handholding.

HOW I GOT SSL EMAIL TO WORK IN AW2K ON MY SUMMER VACATION :)

First I went onto gmail online and found "SETTINGS" on the far right under the gear looking item. In the middle is "FORWARDING and POP/IMAP" settings. You have to ENABLE POP then I selected to DELETE GMAILS COPYl after downloaded. I disabled imap. SAVE CHANGES

I downloaded stunnel 5.06 from stunnel.org Then I installed it. During the install - at your c-prompt it has you enter info to create a "certificate" It is kind of to identify you. Mine was: US, Texas, Azle, etc... When done installing then you run it - or start it. It automatically goes onto your taskbar notification on the bottom right of windows. If you right click on that icon then you can see configuration etc. The latest version of stunnel 5.06 has gmail as a preset example. I left it alone. Here is what it had:

Example SSL server mode services

;[pop3s]
;accept = 995
;connect = 110

;[ssmtp]
;accept = 465
;connect = 25

Example SSL client mode services

[gmail-pop3]
client = yes
accept = 127.0.0.1:110
connect = pop.gmail.com:995

[gmail-smtp]
client = yes
accept = 127.0.0.1:25
connect = smtp.gmail.com:465

It also has IMAP settings but I chose to use pop3 for now.

In Auction wizard I opened FILE, EMAIL ACCOUNTS, and created a new one to match my gmail account. I put 127.0.0.1 for pop3 with port 110 and smtp 127.0.0.1 with port 25 The SMTP AUTHENTICATION was checked and also USE POP3 USERNAME AND PASSWORD FOR SMTP was also checked.

The final key in getting it to work was to find on google the final key. You must be logged in and here is a link to it:
https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps
You are enabling less secure apps to work. THAT final move was what got it all to work. I am hoping that I can get this to work on pair and will report success or failure ASAP.

I understand that email access is one small part of AW2K and to change this portion would probably require the whole thing to be reworked and unstable. I am grateful for the great program that it is and that is it for me!

Wow. Fantastic info. Thanks for posting it.

I'm still clueless about the possible nexus between gmail & Pair accounts, but I'll stay tuned for your update after you work out the settings for Pair.

Thanks again for a very clear post on this topic.

Hi

Thank you for posting the information.

pair.com will move you to a newer server that will upgrade much later down the road. But they will all update to SSL at some point. I have spoken with a supervisor at pair.com concerning requiring all members to move to SSL and expressed my concern. Not all clients handle SSL contrary to what all say. There are other hosting sites that will continue to support POP3/SMTP.

I am glad you posted the Stunnel configuration. I have not had time to eve work on it the last two weeks. That is greatly appreciated.

Yet another delay from pair so I am unable to determine exactly how well my fix really is. Here are their dates for changes to SSL on servers:

Re: SSL E-mail new [re: ehlmann]

OK EVERYBODY! Here it is- it obviously works because in a reply about another issue a tech told me:
"You are connecting to your mailboxes using the POP3 protocol and
authenticating using SSL. All of our mail servers require this SSL
authentication."

When I disputed him he actually rechecked and confirmed the last of the servers are now requiring SSL. The final changes apparently went through in December 2014 and I am doing well so the STUNNEL configuration I posted works for SSL. The ONLY drawback? I have to handstart STUNNEL to run each time my machine is restarted. It is very worth this tiny extra effort to be able to stay with Pair.com The same basic service I get for $5.95 a month is over $25 with Godaddy for example. YEY STUNNEL!

Re: SSL E-mail new [re: Same_Old_Sue]

I am SO sorry that I didn't see or understand you were confused about me "testing" with gmail. The problem I had in making sure STUNNEL worked was that (at that time) Pair was still allowing unsecured email for me. I was unable to test if it worked since it worked anyway. I used gmail to test the settings. Now that I am DEAD sure my pair server has finally starting requiring SSL I am able to say the STUNNEL work-around functions I posted flawlessly.

I recently moved so lost access to my road runner (Time Warner cable) email, set up a Gmail account, found this post and now all is good again! Thankyou for this post, it should be pinned to the top of the Email thread or even in the announcement section with these directions, perhaps even included in the help files?
Thankyou again ehlmann!

You are so welcome but I really think it was all of us working together that solved this problem - including the techs at PAIR (hosting) I simply put it out here with the easiest instructions that I could create.
