From my limited understanding of a "database rebuild".
Databases, no matter who's database it is, Microsoft or others have a tendancy to get out of sinc because of constant adding or deleting records, (names, address, descriptions, emails, etc).
So aw2k is giving us an upfront relink-sort routine to fix the problem before it becomes a REAL problem.
I always do a rebuild right after a backup.
I have read other discussions where a recommended rebuild fixed the problem.
Hope this helps. Yes a rebuild takes time but this is good time vs. 'bad' time.

Fixes links but also, (probably) reclaims disk space. If you do lots of deletes it can make the tables and indexes rather inefficient. You might not see it but sooner of later your performance will degrade without the rebuild.
