Re: FTP Picture new [re: Tradeguy]

Hi

Now I am not normally slow in figuring out things but I am not following you with the picture pack..

Did you enable that on your eBay account so when you self -host and upload the images using AW2K, then the inlisting zoom works?

Judy, you are the opposite of slow :-)

Okay, forget about AW2K and just look at the regular Ebay SYI. When you get to the "Add Pictures" section, and select to add one or more pics, you get a pop-up window with several tabbed upload options. On all the tabs (other than self-hosted) there are 2 "Optional Picture Upgrades" on the bottom of the screens, each with a checkbox. The first box is "Gallery Plus" and the second box is "Picture Pack". If you click on the (?) for description, the picture pack mentions the Zoom feature within the listing. I'll see if I can attach a screen shot to this message.

I'm using the Collectibles category and do have a premium store - not sure if that matters - but both upgrades say "free" to me.

Let me also mention that I am no longer self-hosting any of the pics since I no longer put item pics within my listing descriptions - it totally messes up smart phone formatting, and the ebay top-screen galleries are highly optimized for mobile.

So what I found was simply this. If I let AW2K upload my ebay-hosted images, they will all appear in the listing gallery, but none of them are zoom-able. If I revise the listing, I can add a photo to the existing photos, and even though both picture upgrades are checked, only the new photo is zoomable.

It acts as if the "picture pack" toggle is not being activated during the AW2K upload - OR - the picture is being shrunk to fit the standard gallery size. I don't use any AW2K photo reduction and upload at the highest quality, so I don't think it's that.

Let me know if this makes sense...lol.

HI

AH!! I got it now.. Wow talk about lost for a minute..

That makes total sense..

I will share this with Thom for sure. I still self host some of my own images but for the most part am uploading using eBay picture services. let them pay for the bandwidth

Off to fiddle with this and see what I can do!

Thank you for explaining again to Mrs Temporary Brain dead

Re: FTP Picture new [re: bluepennylady]

When you do your own testing, you might notice that if you revise the listing and add a picture, the "previews" show the zoom-in-listing as active for all the pics, but when the listing goes live, it's gone except for the one you added. I'm mentioning it cause a few times I thought I had solved the issue cause the previews looked right....

It's also interesting that the single self-hosted picture that ebay allows in the gallery always seems to have the zoom feature and has no option either way, so long as it's big enough.

My obsessions are interfering with my compulsions again...

Re: FTP Picture new [re: Tradeguy]

A little update...

So now it seems that ebay has completely removed the "self-hosted" option for the gallery pic. You can see this if you use the manual SYI.

AW2K, however, seems not affected because it treats the "FTP" image as a "transfer from web url" image already - which is the only option other than "transfer from PC". No matter what, ebay is making a copy and using the copy for it's gallery image(s).

On the zooming thing.,

As it stands right now, if you tell AW2K to use ebay image hosting, there is NO zoom, no matter the pic size, but you can have multiple pics. This is odd and something Thom needs to look at since when done manually, you get the zoom for ebay-hosted pics.

If you tell AW2K to use FTP, ebay treats that as a "copy from web", and you do get zoom (if the pic is big enough). I seem to get the zoom on any pic 1000 pixels or bigger on any size, even though ebay is now recommending 1600. (Actual min after July will be at least 501 on any side)

Now, if Thom could just get ebay to handle multiple pics as "copy from web", we would could have up to 12 pics, all with zoom, instead of just the first pic.

Of course I am only talking about the gallery pics - which ebay is strongly recommending be the ONLY pics in your listing. I've been selling on ebay since '98, and if I have learned but one thing it's this - when ebay recommends something, you had better do it. No sooner had I thought that when I read from an ebay pink that listings with pics embedded in descriptions will have downgraded search placement for mobile shoppers (which is about 30% of all ebay shoppers, soon to be 50%).

They are also "suggesting" seller not use any formatting in their descriptions that would prevent reformatting for various devices (like smart phones). Translation: they will start blocking certain HTML code (they already block quite a bit). In particular, frames and any java.

I am in the process of stripping down all my descriptions in anticipation of these changes...
