PayPal Security Key and AW?

PayPal has introduced a Security Key, a device that generates a new personal key every 30 seconds. Use of this should make your account much more resistant to unauthorized access. I signed up for mine last night.

More info at PayPal. Try Help "security key". Sign up at My Account/Profile/ Account Information.

While signing up, I noticed a button that said something like "use this thing with eBay, too".

Any AW user have experience with this? Any problems?

Ned:
Yes, I've used the Security Key for about 6 months. At first PayPal said that it was available on BETA so I applied. Then they said no BETA and wait 2 weeks. The two weeks passed and the Key arrived in the mail. Once you get it (it looks exactly like the picture on PayPal) all you have to do is go to the setup page and type in the ID number on the back and it is activated. The key generates a new 6 digit number about every 60 seconds. So when you log into PayPal you do it normally then the next screen asks for your security key. Push the little button on the key and there is the 6 digit number. Type the number in and you are taken to your regular PayPal page. The system is the same with eBay. Once you sign up for PayPal you are automatically signed up with eBay. You get a similar second screen on eBay where it asks for your key.

I find it unobtrusive and I just keep it by my desk. This makes your account a lot more secure. Even a Phishing scam that somehow gets your user name and password will not be able to get into the account as they don't have the key generator. Cool huh?

It is run by Verisign so any other site that uses this same program from Verisign will allow you to use your current key all you have to do is register your key number.

This is the same security key I was talking about a day or so ago with Google Base.

To answer your question - I love the security it supplies and it works great with eBay. The only difference is if you choose to enter your key number immediatly after and on the same line as your password you cannot embed or save your password.

Ned,

Once you authorize AW2000 to interact with eBay on your behalf, there won't be any problems.

Thanks for answering what Ned asked as that is not what I did. I hit send and never said it won't have any problem with AW. I need to learn to read a lot better. Feeling really stupid now.

Garry,

Holey moley, I did not intend to do that at all. I am so very sorry. I thought your answer was just real good. The only reason I posted that was for the new users that happen to log on and read about it. Many of the new users get kind of confused about having to authorize AW2000 to interact the first time.

I am really sorry.

Geeze - don't feel bad or sorry. I didn't answer his question at all. I gave a general salesman review of the key. Ned only wanted to know if it worked with AW2K. LOL I never answerd that and well felt rather dumb. That just goes to show you that reading is fundamental! .

See dick, see jane, see spot, see fluffy. (umm that shows my age huh?)

Garry, Judy

Hey, it was all interesting.

It would be more secure if PayPal didn't put their name on the key.

Ned:

When I got my key I thought the same thing. I solved it with the judicious application of water and a bit of alcohol using a piece of paper towel. It took off the applied label every so nicely.

Garry,

Just got my key. I think they're printing the PayPal logo now, and alcohol wasn't enough.

I used acetone and a cotton swab. That worked well.

CAUTION: Doing this may cause surface damage to the plastic, although it didn't seem to hurt mine much. If the appearance of the plastic is more important to you than removing the PayPal identification, don't use acetone. For me, the identification had to go.

Re: PayPal Security Key and AW? new [re: Ned]

Ned,

Now I understand about branding and logos, advertisting, etc. But it makes no sense to me to have a security key to make it harder for someone to get into your account and then stick Paypal all over it. Go figure.

Ned:
Glad you got the logo off. I thought acetone might mess it up a bit. But it was worth it right? It is very much like the car dealer putting HIS logo on MY car and then refusing to pay me the going rates for a billboard. They never like it when I tell them the logo on the car is a deal breaker. LOL.

Re: PayPal Security Key and AW? new [re: AquilaStamps]

Garry,

We might be related. I have never tolerated dealer advertising on a car. Not even a license plate frame.

The acetone damage was simply enough to smooth the texture of the plastic body. Small price to pay for the added security.

Ned:
Ya never know - we just may be related somehow. I too won't ever allow their license plate advertising. They claim they don't understand why - everyone loves their frame. I'm so happy for everyone else.

It doesn't make sense to put the PayPal logo on the key - as you said security. They even tout it as something you can put on your keychain. Well what happens when your keys are lost - and someway the person who ends up with them knows you. I know it's a long stretch to say they can get into you PayPal account - but why tempt fate.

Re: PayPal Security Key and AW? new [re: AquilaStamps]

On June 15th at eBay Live, PayPal President Rajiv Dutta announced that the Security Key program was out of Beta, and therefore now a standard PayPal program.

I am delighted with my security key, and want to encourage everyone to sign up for this.

BTW, if you have multiple eBay or PayPal accounts, you can use a single Security Key for all of them. I've been using mine for two separate eBay accounts for a week now. No problem.

Ned,

Were you at eBay Live????? And I missed you???? Bummer!

I heard the announcement. Took one of the classes where they talked about it. I still need to get mine. One would think as much as I am online I would have already got that done

Judy,

"Were you at eBay Live?????"

No, but I read the RSS feed. :-)

BTW, the eBay General RSS feed has been fixed recently. When I first signed up for it, it just kept accumulating items. Nothing ever fell off the list. You'd get over a thousand items every time you refreshed, and all of them (even from 2004) would be shown as new. I almost dropped the feed, but it works properly now.

Ned,

That is good news about the RSS feeds. I stopped using it a long time ago because of all the junk. I will check it out again.

Thanks!!

Let me add a vote to your comments. I too love my key and even use it with GoogleBase without a problem. It is a very good addition to the security measures that are already in place.

I think this is one of the better security measures available and it is well worth using.

I spoke too soon about the eBay General RSS feed.

It's as bad as ever. Over 1100 messages marked as new, dating from 2004.

Ned,

Boy am I ever glad you are trying out the RSS feeds for me That is so nice of you to offer.

In all seriousness, that is really bad. I hope eBay gets it fixed!

Re: PayPal Security Key and AW? new [re: bluepennylady]

Ned/Judy:

After reading that they may have fixed the feed I decided to try it again too. First update I had NO messages at all. then it worked got just the most recent. A day later got flooded with messages. Then they all disappeared, which was fine with me! Checked maybe later that day and just had messages from two days prior! So maybe they are working on it, but I have decided to let Ned take care of the testing from now on!
Let us know what the progress is!

Re: PayPal Security Key and AW? new [re: bluepennylady]

All--

It's really no trouble at all. I told RSSOwl, my feed reader, that eBay General was one of my "Favorites"--really stretching the truth. Anyway, when I get my daily Dilbert, it updates eBay General automatically. Easy enough to see if things are still messed up.
