Adding Insurance at Paypal

I got an email from a buyer saying he was unable to add insurance when he got to Paypal by hitting the Pay Now button after the auction ended. Paypal Customer Service tells me (after 3 phone calls and a total of 30 min on hold -- disconnected on one and given wrong number to call on another -- typical) that they were updating the site recently and customers were blocked from changing shipping amounts or adding insurance, however this issue has come up with other buyers in the past, so I'm not sure the technical difficulties is the real answer.

Is there some account setting at Paypal or on eBay that I need to tweak so my buyers can add insurance when they use the Pay Now button?

AND

Does anyone know how to add a tag for insurance in the link below? I tried adding "&insurance=$1.70" right after the $2.00 for S&H (without the quote marks), but it didn't work. This only comes into play if a buyer either tells me ahead of time they want insurance or if I send a revised invoice with insurance included. If I type the amount into the AW Insurance Cost field and then generate the email, the total due reflects the insurance, but then if you follow the link, the insurance cost just gets lumped in with the S&H, which seems a little lame.

Thanks, Sue

Sue,

You can make the adjustment in "My eBay | Preferences | Payment from buyers | allow buyers to edit totals"

That is how I addressed the issue quite a while back and it worked. I will need to check Paypal as I don't recall off the top my head about Paypal. But I will look for you.

As far as the link... Is that the link in your AW2000 total amount due Invoices?

And do I understand you correctly, you want to be able to offer a total with insurance and a total without insurance??

Hi Judy,

My eBay Preferences have been set that way for a long time (allowing buyers to change the payment details at Paypal). Maybe the story about Paypal doing site upgrades is true.

Yes, that link is in all my AW2k amount-due invoice emails. Only about 1/4 of my buyers use it, but it's nice when they do -- the Paypal payment notification is automatically associated with the invoice.

Yes, I'd like to have a different template for when I know the buyer wants insurance -- the link in that template would include a tag for insurance. Problem is.....I have no idea if the tag would be supported at the Paypal site.

Sue,

I will check Paypal later tonight and see if I can find another setting. With all the changes who knows what they have done

As far as the Total amount due link. You can add a link that includes insurance and one that does not on the same invoice. But you have to add to the total amount due invoice another range of field tags just like the ones already on the template except you leave out the Insurance.

I am doing maintenance on my server so I can't get into the database When it finishes, I'll pull up the information on how to do it for you.

This is the 2002 post where I got the idea of the Paypal link:

Sue,

Paypal has a new button and email link code. I have the instructions for creating the Paypal PayNow URL link which works with AW2000. I have it on all my total amount due invoices. I will be happy to send you the instructions if you like.

I still need to dig up the How to for creating the section that does not have insurance for you.
