Paperless pyments on eBay deadline new

Hi, all,

Just a reminder that the deadline for cleaning up your listings to remove any and all reference to checks, money orders and cashier checks is January 15, 2009.

Now here's the deal,,, if your description has the term "Check" in it, the listing will fail. So terminology such as "Check our store out" in the description field, Header or footer area will have to be changed. Even "Check xxx website for more information" for further product clarification will have to be edited out. Ebay is looking for the term "check" or "money order" in the description fields too.

I know, I know, such a deal to have to edit everything. But keep in mind, if you have left acceptable payment methods in the LIsting template inside "Payment" then only one change is necessary. Edit the template and it applies globally when listing new Auction lots.

Happy selling!

Isn't that going to be a problem with terms like...

Electronic Check or e-Check (which is accepted)
"Check out" (like..."Use Ebay's Check out")
Custom Check Book cover
Checks and Money Orders NOT accepted

Wouldn't they start with all listings that have "other" payment types selected? I mean...I've been paypal only for many months.

Is this ebay being "deaf, blind, and dumb" again?

Okay...time to scrub down my listing templates...again...

Thanks for the info!

Hi,

I agree 100% ! "Other payment methods" or even "See item description" are getting warnings. Which creates an issue with "Local Pickup"

I think they have opened up a can of worms with this terminology thing...

And I am scrubbing listings too. Or hoping the few things that have those terms in them sell before end of year.....

Oh this is great -

They, eBay use the words:

"Check the seller's reputation"

"Check how you're protected"

It's on every listing page, and they generate it!

Marty,

I agree completely. But it is the same as the paperless payments. WE cannot even say we accept them yet eBay offers checks and money orders as a fee payment method to sellers... Not that I think sellers should be prohibited from electing to pay fees with a check or money order. I think those are all acceptable payment methods.

Just kind of weird...

Re: Paperless pyments on eBay deadline new [re: bluepennylady]

I couldn't sleep one night recently, so I got up, turned on my computer, and spent 90 minutes editing my (too numerous) templates. The only phrase I could come up with that I didn't think would get me in trouble was, "Contact me if you have ANY questions about ANYTHING to do with this auction or the auction process." I hope bidders will get the implied "wink, wink," and I hope they'll use the email link in my description instead of going through eBay. Are new sellers even allowed to insert email links in their descriptions or auction templates?

Anyway, here's my question: Do you think we'll get our hands slapped if we continue to use email templates that indicate buyers can send any form of payment they wish? I'd worry if I were using some customized email template that would go via eBay's system, but with third-party software, we should be ok, right? EBay would have to actually "go undercover" and buy something to find out what our email templates say. After the sale, we are communicating with our buyers via private email -- totally beyond the reach of eBay's rules, it seems to me, maybe even legally beyond their control. Would appreciate opinions.

Thanks, Sue

Sue,

The current links policy allows the seller to include in their listing one email link which opens an email client for asking questions. That was one of the policy changes eBay backed down on earlier this year, gave in and allowed the seller to leave that type of link in. The sellers and software vendors really fought eBay on that one. For the third party email campaign programs, email is a major deal.

I would strongly suggest AW2K users consider leaving all links, payment methods and policies in the templates either on the appropriate page or in the header or footer. That way one change applies globally.

If a user enters that information into the description field, then every single Auction lot must be edited as opposed to editing a template.

Good to know eBay caved on the email link issue.

I'd still like to know if other AW users are changing their email messages to buyers to reflect eBay's new paperless-payment policy. My congrats email templates offer to accept virtually any form of payment. Seems to me eBay has neither the right nor the ability to interfere with what I say in my private communications with buyers.

Just wondering how other AW users are going to deal with this.

Re: Paperless pyments on eBay deadline new [re: tictictic_OnEbay]

Sue,

Here is the link to the post concerning eBay's announcement concerning any references to paper payments in descriptions and/or email communications;

http://pages.ebay.com/sell/August2008Update/OtherFAQ/index.html#3

The question is down about halfway. Here is the content of eBay's response.

What will happen if I ask a buyer to use a prohibited payment method?
Requesting prohibited payment methods from your customers either by email or in your item description is a violation of the new Accepted Payments Policy. Violations of this policy may result in:
Listing cancellation
Forfeit of eBay fees on cancelled listings
Limits on account privileges
Loss of PowerSeller status
Account suspension

Here's the bottom line. We can take the risk of leaving references to checks, money orders and cashier check in our AW2K email templates. If a buyer decides to turn you in, all they have to do is forward a copy of your email to eBay and you are in trouble.

The two seminars I have attended concerning this particular policy have both re-iterated the same thing,,, if a buyer turns the seller in and sends a copy of the email to eBay, ebay will take action against that seller.

I am not saying I agree with eBay's paperless payment policy. I am saying I would rather comply than take the risk that one disgruntle buyer forward one of my emails to eBay. It simply is not worth the risk to me.

I can also tell you, there are not a handful of buyers on eBay who are aware this new policy is about to go into effect. So I have inserted a blurp about the policy in every single AW2K email template along with the link to the "Suggestion box". And the blurp encourages the buyer to let their opinion be known to eBay.

Not one single buyer who has taken the time to respond to me, has liked the policy. Even if they use Paypal or credit cards online, not a single buyer believes eBay has the right to force all buyers to use credit cards or Paypal.

The only way we as sellers will get anything changed is to use eBay's own processes. Participate in all their surveys, send in suggestions via the Suggestion box and email the staff/management in a non-emotional fact stating manner. And to get the buyers on-board with us. Hence my email campaign protest to the policy

Re: Paperless pyments on eBay deadline new [re: bluepennylady]

Thanks for another excellent and comprehensive reply. I'll have to read it a couple more times before I've really digested it. It's going to take even more time for me to simmer down. This new policy along with the one about masking bidders' IDs has me permanently steamed.
