Adjust Shipping Cost at Paypal? new

I use Fedex for large items, but because that's not an eBay shipping option, I enter the info as if I'll use UPS (Calculated Shipping). The Listing Templates I use for big items have a note at the top telling bidders to ignore the UPS calculator and saying the item will be shipped Fedex with $x for the packing fee. When a sale is made, I tell the buyer their invoice will be emailed as soon as I've packed the item and determined the exact weight and box size. But sometimes buyers submit a Paypal payment immediately which means it includes the estimated UPS cost. Usually, that will more than cover the Fedex cost, so I'll end up issuing a partial refund.

The problem is that every now and then, the UPS shipping that shows up at Paypal is lower than the Fedex cost (because the box I end up using is a little larger than I estimated -- size being the big factor these days). So I email the buyer, reminding them of the note at the top of the auction, and I refund their entire payment (because if they made an additional payment, I'd have to pay another Paypal base fee). Then I box up the item, send their invoice, and hope they aren't too miffed that the shipping is higher than they expected.

So (finally), here's my question:

Is there a way I can alter the shipping cost that appears at Paypal? I have my account set to allow buyers to change the shipping cost (and other fields, as well, I think), but some of the newbies can't handle this, and they are afraid to use the link I provide that would fill everything in for them. Is it something I can do at eBay? I have my Preferences set to not use Checkout. Do you guys have Checkout enabled even though you don't use it? If so, are you able to adjust the shipping cost that shows up at Paypal?

Thanks, Sue

Re: Adjust Shipping Cost at Paypal? [re: tictictic_OnEbay]

Sue,

Although I RARELY invoice through eBay and barely know what the invoices look like I do have the checkout enabled as well as the ability for the buyer to adjust shipping.

I have found that if I submit an AW2000 invoice to a buyer if the buyer does not pay immediately that invariably they will go through eBay checkout and alter the shipping cost to submit payment.

Most buyers will use the Paypal link. I tell them it is a Paypal inserted URL paynow link that auto completes the correct information. and to look on the browser address bar to note the payment is being made in a secure site https.

I agree newbies have such a hard time navigating the site and paying.

I don't use Paypal to print out anything or to invoice buyers. So I don't know the answer to the question about adjusting the shipping cost that shows up on Paypal

Maybe if we holler really loud someone who uses Paypal will drop by.

Sue/Judy,
Sorry for not responding promptly to your yelling!
Actually didn't hear it till just now, life has been happening.

Anyway I will have to side with Judy on this, i do all I can not to use eBay or PayPal for invoicing, etc.
But I do know what you are talking about, a couple years ago I had a string of buyers that would go into PP and willy nilly change shipping to whatever they wanted. Of course always lower than the actual! I just sucked it up and prayed it would not be an on going thing. And it did actually go away.

sorry I wasn't more help.

Hi Marty,

I didn't get notified of your reply -- just happened upon it tonight.

I think whether buyers can or cannot alter the fields at Paypal is a setting in your Preferences (or whatever they're called at Paypal). Look around, and I'm sure you'll find it.

I telephoned Paypal to ask about my issue and was told it was something I would have to do from eBay. I haven't called eBay yet (they seem to have added more contact-ability, so maybe it's not impossible to get a human on the phone now). If I get an answer, I'll post it here.

Sue,
No worries!
I only get notified maybe half the time too!

Yeah it's in the settings, or preferences somewhere.
I really don't mind having it available for them to change, because customers would opt out of the insurance charge. Which probably is a non issue with the changes now.
But mostly no one either knew how to change or left it alone and just paid the calculated amount.
But at that one particular time in history, seemed like the word was out that you could change prices and charges to your advantage so they did!
Hopefully that doesn't surface again.

But if you get an answer lets see it!
