Pair.com spam-filtering Paypal notifications

If you are using Pair.com for email forwarding, have you noticed lately (since late September) that any of your Paypal payment notifications have been designated spam?

I've been using Pair.com's spam filter (I think it's called Squirrel Mail or something). It's set up to add **JUNK** to the subject line (as I recall, the user decides what characters to add), then my AW filter sends them directly to the trash. As far as I knew, it's been working nicely.

In the last couple weeks, I've had two customers ask where their stuff was. I'd write back that I hadn't gotten their payment. They'd send a copy of the Paypal receipt. Chagrin aplenty!! Had to apologize big time. But I hadn't gotten the Paypal notifications (which is kinda like saying you didn't get the bill, so you didn't pay your mortgage -- that excuse never flies).

So tonight, it happened again, and the only way I knew a payment had been made was a note I got from the buyer talking about it. So I looked in the AW Trash, and there's the Paypal notification with **JUNK** appended to the subject heading. And I found another one from yesterday!

These were all for multiple purchases. Don't seem to be having this problem with single-purchase payments. I wonder if Pair's spam program is confused only on that particular subject heading or something in the body of the email that refers to multiple items. Here's what the subject line says:
Subject: **JUNK** Notification of an Instant Payment Received for Multiple Items

Just wondering (and alerting you guys) if other Pair.com users have experienced the same problem. Judy, you use Pair, don't you?

Re: Pair.com spam-filtering Paypal notifications new [re: tictictic_OnEbay]

Sue,

Yes I use pair.com. Now I am having Junk mail problems but it isn't with Paypal payments. But--it can be corrected so it doesn't happen repeatedly.
log into your pair.com account.
Go to Email management
Click the Junk email filter settings button

In the lower portion of that page is a section labeled
"Additional Junk email filter settings"
"Add and remove accepted email addresses"

If you add Paypal's payment email address there, it won't be flipped in as Junk anymore. I had to add eBay Question to seller, you know the UsetheYellowButton.com email address. And I lowered the junk mail filter to the lowest possible.

You might try it and see if it helps.

Re: Pair.com spam-filtering Paypal notifications new [re: bluepennylady]

Hi Judy,

I have my Pair.com spam setting one up from the bottom. Adding the Paypal address to the accepted list is a good idea, but these all have the buyer's address as the return email, so I'm in touch with Pair tech support (sent them a copy of the raw source) to see if they can determine what the real from address is. I'm thinking it's probably sendmail@paypal.com, but I'll wait to hear back from the pros.

Thanks, Sue

Sue,

Nothing like that is ever simple, is it! You might share the real email addy with us once they determine what it is.

I'll have to look at what my filter is set at. Whatever it is, good email is rarely caught. I'll look and let you know.

Here's Pair's reply:

You can whitelist the 'Received' field, which in all these messages will
be a 'paypal.com' host name.

You can do this through the Account Control Center.

1. Log in to the Account Control Center (ACC)

2. Click on File Management

3. Click the Home button under the Jump To A Directory listing

4. Click on the folder icon to the left of '.spamassassin'

5. Click on the file name 'user_prefs'

6. Click on the Edit This File button

7. Enter the following line:
whitelist_from_rcvd *@paypal.com

8. Click 'Save Changes' at the bottom

Sue,

I had forgot about adding the domains to the whitelist. Thanks for sharing their response.

Re: Pair.com spam-filtering Paypal notifications new [re: tictictic_OnEbay]

Hi there y'all. I have been using AW2K and Pair since 2003 with great success and just recently have experienced the same problems with Pair/Paypal notifications. I called Paypal since I have had no problems with Pair EVER. They blamed spam filters and I thought I used none.. Lo and behold I have had the same problems of it going to junk, also. (oops, sorry Paypal!) I then simply removed all filters since I only let customers have that address AFTER they win and love me anyway. There is a way to get onto Pair and permit any single website free access to send all to you, though, example of *.paypal.com to get all from Paypal

Paypal annoyances (was Pair.com spam-filtering) new [re: ehlmann]

Hi ehlmann,

So I'm not the only one...... always good to know.

You can also use the method I posted on October 19 (direct from Pair.com).

On a related issue........

Am I the only one pulling my hair out over the recent changes to the Paypal site? Not recognizing login info; phone answering system is messed up; "wasn't able to verify your identity"; and so on. I've called them three times in as many days -- all I get are apologies from people with really strong accents.

But the biggest headache (started 7 to 10 days ago) is that clicking the link in the Notification of Instant Payment email now takes us (after logging in) to our Account Overview page where we have to peruse the list of recent transactions and find the right one by the buyer's name. Well, I don't pay any attention to the buyer's name! The email says View the details of this transaction at https://www.paypal.com/us/vst/id=[long string of numbers and letters here], and that link used to take us directly to the Details page. Now it takes us to our Account Overview. If this is also happening to you, please call or email Paypal and complain.

Thanks, Sue

Sue,

The entire Paypal site has changed around. I have had difficulty as well. Some transactions do not post to my account as soon as the buyer pays. Like it did a week ago. Today it seems to be working better than yesterday though.

Re: Paypal annoyances (was Pair.com spam-filtering) new [re: bluepennylady]

Judy/Sue:

I got a strange email from PayPal about three weeks ago. Announcing a Ta-Da grand new wonderful change in the site. They said something about it would help filter out the bad payments and questionable payments. The result is that you get the header line that says "all items aren't posted yet" or something like that. It supposedly gives them time to check what they feel are bad payments. Well as soon as they started this I too had problems with the site. A repeat customer's payment didn't show up for almost 3 hours and at the same time a new customer's payment showed up immediatly. So who knows. My feeling is that they are going through changes and as a result have passed their problems on to us. I have written to them but don't really expect an answer. If by some chance they do answer I'll let you know.

Re: Paypal annoyances (was Pair.com spam-filtering) new [re: AquilaStamps]

Garry,

Well I am glad to know you received the same type of email and are seeing the same thing. I just wonder if the payment notifications are held until the payment appears in our account as well. I bet they are while Paypal examines the payment. Which would account for some of the payment notifications coming in extremely slow and very late somedays. I have people who email stating they just submitted payment and it will be hours before we can find it.

It's not just us that's for sure. I recall reading an auctionbytes story about it so went back to see if I could find it. Here's the link to the story Ina wrote about it.

It doesn't help any of us but it sort of explains what is going on.

Garry,

Thanks for the link. I read the article. It does explain a lot, doesn't it.

Re: Paypal annoyances (was Pair.com spam-filtering) new [re: bluepennylady]

Judy:
It does explain quite a bit but it hasn't solved the inherent problem of not being able to either see or get to the payment. I guess in one way this is a good thing in that they are being more diligent about checking for fraud. It is about time they stopped almost always siding with the buyer. For way too long they forgot the seller. We can all recall horror stories where someone complained they didn't get an item from a seller and the funds were immediatly taken back from the seller. Yet the seller can complain to PayPal and often nothing happens.

So let's all hope this new procedure will go toward protecting the seller to a better degree.

Re: Paypal annoyances (was Pair.com spam-filtering) new [re: AquilaStamps]

Garry,

no it doesn't solve the problem. Which I had one today. Payment didn't show up on the recent transaction page. And it didn't show up for several days and Paypal never sent out the payment notification. so we didn't ship the buyer's product. The buyer was understandably upset but when we explained what happened, he calmed down.

The cuecat gun I bought last night, when I paid with Paypal, the payment didn't even show up in my Paypal account for over a hour. I am not impressed with the New and improved Paypal.
