Sales Tax Support?

I've just gone through my first filing of the California State, Local, and District Sales and Use Tax Return. Bleahh....

I ended up dumping the ledger into Excel and then checking the corresponding invoices while adding the taxing district info to the spreadsheet, then manipulated the spreadsheet as a database to get the info I needed. Worked OK, but if I had a lot to do, I would be wishing that I'd done it throughout the year.

How do you handle the sales tax?

Ned,

You can use the Reports to generate your Sales tax summary. And that report can be customized to remove information you really don't need.as well as add the information you do need.

Have you tried using the Sales tax summary and it didn't work for you?

Didn't notice the Sales Tax Summary. Don't know how it could have been clearer, though.

I wonder--should I create a No Tax tax profile, or just have every invoice set to California tax profile and use each invoice's Taxable checkbox to control it? Or is there some better way?

Ned,

I don't know what the California sales tax laws are exactly? If they are destination based sales tax and you only collect sales tax on items delivered within the State of California, depending on how much you sell to California residents, it might be easier to simply make a single Invoice taxable.

That is what we do. If a Kansas resident buys something from us. we just select the taxable buyer box on the INvoice, check the items as being taxable, select the appropriate tax profile in the drop down box and we are good to go.

If the correct tax profile is not created, it only takes a few minutes to create a tax profile.

So in essence everything is a no tax profile unless you change the Invoice to taxable.

I hope that makes sense.
