As soon as my teary eyed daughter in law told me what happened, I gave her the list of things to do. She is so precious anyway, I about choked watching her.
Credit card companies were first on the list. All if fine on that front. Bank took care of credit bureau. Thankfully we know the Bank officer personally, The bank is in the process of changing their accounts, new debit cards, etc. And of course, the bank notifies the Internet fraud department. I can't remember the correct name, I had her change all the passwords on everything. Paypal, eBay, Online banking, everything. And they have filled out a mountain of paperwork.
You are correct, the scammers are already long gone. My kids will appreciate the sympathies. And they both agreed if posting their ordeal would spare someone else the horror, that I should post it.
